The Greeneville City School Board of Education met yesterday evening and approved the purchase of a vehicle for the Family Resource Center.
Dr. Suzanne Bryant spoke on behalf of Director Amy Renner, who has been helping students and their families through difficulties. Renner helps families get into housing, delivers supplies, materials, and goes above and beyond her job description. She uses her personal vehicle and uses it to help students and their families with transportation.
The purchase of the vehicle for the center would help Renner continue with services but most of all will help with safety. It will support homeless students remain engaged in school related activities and Renner can continue her mission. As Director of Schools Steve Starnes mentioned, “it’s not a hand out, it’s a hand up.”
It was approved with majority vote from Board Member Josh Quillen and Chairperson Cindy Luttrell for almost $29,000. Members Pam Botta and Crystal Hirschy were absent and Vice Chairperson Dr. Craig Shepard voted against it. There were some concern regarding liabilities and what guidelines were for families who needed the transportation. That will be brought up at the next meeting.
The board also approved the purchase of Custodial Supplies and Equipment, Video Production Computer Systems, and Engineering Program Equipment. Equipment approved includes: machine tools, RevRobotics for the STEM Lab, 3D printing supplies, and a JET Floor Drill Press.
