Greeneville, Cherokee, and Science Hill rolled into East End Lanes Monday afternoon and opened up play in the district bowling tournament. Each team looked to secure an opening round win and advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The Greene Devils came in as the number 5 seed and got off to a fast start securing the 5.5 – 2.5 lead over the Chiefs. Jon Gilbert rolled a 149, while Dante Smith was close behind with a 148 and Evan Litchfield a 142. Roudy Henley led the Chiefs with a 152, followed by Kody Gowin’s 142.
Leading by 61-pins, the Greene Devils tacked on 4 individual points in game two, but the Chiefs cut the score to 9.5 – 6.5 as they outscored the Greene Devils 837 – 806. Seth Manis pushed all the right buttons with his 198, while Henley and Gowin both finished with a 152. Litchfield’s 159 helped keep the Devils in front headed to the Baker games.
Both teams looked to gain the upper hand early as Noah Robbins and Quinten Scalf got things started for their respective teams. However, it would be Dante Smith, Litchfield, and Gilbert who would help shut the door for the Devils 144 – 136 and 134 – 130, helping the Devils secure the 20.5 – 6.5 win.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Devils used a variety of scores to jump out to the 8 – 0 lead. Addison Phillips got her day started with a 134, while Bria Trohon finished with a 136 and Ariana Powell a 125.
Game two saw Emily Walker and Powell both roll a 127 to help extend the Lady Devil lead to 14 – 2. Trinity Bowen and Madison Federico won points for the Lady Toppers with a 155 and 115.
The Lady Devils sealed the 25 – 2 win with 125 – 109 and 101 – 99 decisions in Baker action.
Second round action gets under way Wednesday at noon when the Greeneville Lady Devils square off with the Dobyns Bennett Lady Indians and the Cherokee Lady Chiefs take on the Chuckey Doak Lady Knights. The boys’ semi-finals follow at 2:30 as Greeneville advances to take on Chuckey Doak, the number 1 seed and Dobyns Bennett squares off with Science Hill. The winners will not only vie for a district championship at 5:00, but will also advance to the regional tournament in January.
