Special Event Requests Approved For Iris Festival This May

The Greeneville Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved special event requests for Keep Greene Beautiful to host the 3 Mile Walk at the upcoming 28th Annual Iris Festival this May and Sundown on Depot.

The special event request for Sundown on Depot, a car show that was added into the Festival and brought in 100’s of cars last year, would allow portions of Main, Summer, Church and Depot streets to be closed. About 100 people showed up for the 3 mile walk last year at the Iris Festival. It will be held May 20 and 21 in downtown Greeneville along with the BRAGco cycling event.

The consideration of appointment for Town Vacancy on the Industrial Development Board of Greene County was tabled until the next meeting. The Board agreed there needs to be more research on what is required for the position, including clarification on appointment and if you need to be a resident in the county.

The Youth Commission for the town of Greenville ended the meeting with their presentations to the board speaking on their thoughts regarding poverty, the Opioid crisis, and better housing options. The youth commission was developed through the town with a goal for young students to learn about local government. They spend some of their time visiting different departments trying to learn more about the leaders in the community and how it all works.

Some interesting topics in the presentations included Narcan and how it should be more available to those who may need it. Some of the youth commission members felt if Narcan was made more available and more education was provided, that it would help save a lot of lives. Another presentation included creating an arcade in Downtown Greenville for not only young teens but anyone who wants to have a cool spot to hang out before going home, have a little fun, play some arcade games, and possibly sing some karaoke.
