Greene County’s renewed textile recycling initiative is already delivering impressive results for our community, both environmentally and financially.
Launched in late March through a partnership with America’s Thrift Stores and under the direction of Solid Waste Director Jim Greene, the program collected over 3 tons or 6,468 pounds of recyclable textiles in its very first month. That means more than 3 tons of material we did not have to pay to dispose of at the landfill, resulting in immediate savings for Greene County taxpayers and helping extend the life of our landfill.
This partnership also creates meaningful impact beyond waste reduction. A portion of the proceeds from the recycled textiles directly benefits the East Tennessee Children’s Make‑A‑Wish Network, helping bring hope and joy to children facing critical illnesses. Greene County’s participation is making a difference both here at home and in the lives of families across East Tennessee.

Your commitment to this program is already producing measurable results, and together with the leadership of our Solid Waste Department and the support of America’s Thrift Stores we are expanding the program to all Convenience Centers by the end of May 2026.
