Greene Countians gathered in downtown Greeneville Monday night for a remembrance of September 27, 2024, when the flood waters from Hurricane Helene ravaged the area.

The forty minute ceremony on the steps of the Greene County Courthouse was to remember those like Boone McCrary who gave his life and the thousands of emergency responders and even private citizens who responded in the wake of the storm and continue to assist in the rebuild and recovery 367 days later.

Following opening comments and prayer from County Chaplain Danny Ricker, Nick Gunter sang God Bless America.   Boone McCrary’s mother Debbie Fisher and his ER supervisor at Greeneville Community Hospital where he was a nurse Sherrie Davis rang a bell and lit a candle in his honor.    Others speaking during the remembrance were:

During comments from Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison, first responder vehicles activated sirens in unison at 6:33 p.m. to recognize the moment the Kinser Bridge was lost.  The ceremony closed with John Shell playing amazing grace on the bagpipes, with church bells continuing to ring as the crowd dispersed.  Radio Greeneville’s Ron Metcalfe served as moderator for the event.
