Greene County Schools Magic Book Buses Hit the Road for Summer

Greene County Schools is gearing up to roll out mobile book libraries this summer to ensure kids continue developing critical reading skills even when they are not in school.

A kickoff event will be held on Friday, May 30 at Apex Bank at 3015 E. Andrew Johnson Hwy. from 4-6 p.m. to let the community know the buses are on the road and open for business. The buses will feature stops at schools, churches, community centers, neighborhoods and many other places.

According to Academic Coach Amanda Carpenter, the goal of the Magic Book Bus program is to make sure children have access to books year-round, especially kids living in rural parts of the county where access to libraries is limited. “Both buses will be on the road Monday-Friday in June and July 7th-11th and 14th-18th. The buses are free and open to anyone interested in getting a book.”

Visitors may read books while at the bus or take the books with them to return to the bus at a later stop this summer. A schedule of those future stops can be followed on the Greene County Schools Facebook page.

The Greene County Schools Magic Book Buses are sponsored in part by generous community donations and the United Way of Greene County. The program is always appreciative of book donations. Anyone interested in donating to the Magic Book Bus program should contact the Greene County Schools Foundation, Greene LEAF, at [email protected] or by calling 423.823.0732.
