Local and state officials announced that two public libraries in Greene County will receive state grant funding to enhance digital literacy and internet access.
Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, State Senator Steve Southerland, and State Representative David Hawk announced that Greene County will receive $5,844 through the Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) Grant program.
Specifically, the Greeneville-Greene County Public Library will receive $1,250 to help cover the cost of digital literacy instructors. The Mosheim Public Library will receive $4,594 to fund digital literacy instructors and provide Wi-Fi hotspots.
“Public libraries are essential resources in building strong communities,” said Secretary Hargett. “We are grateful to partner with the Department of Economic and Community Development and the Tennessee General Assembly to enhance the technological offerings available at these libraries.”
TOP Grants are funded by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and administered by the Office of the Secretary of State.
“These grants ensure our libraries continue meeting emerging needs within our growing community,” said Senator Southerland. “Congratulations to our local library leaders for their diligent work in securing these investments, which will help solidify our future.”
Public libraries across Tennessee use TOP Grant funding to address the specific needs of their communities. Resources provided through the program may include digital literacy training, internet hotspots, solar charging stations, and expanded internet access within library facilities.
“Libraries are vital engines of opportunity, shaping the academic paths of current and future generations,” said Representative Hawk. “This funding will strengthen our local libraries, ensuring they continue to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools essential for success in today’s world.”
This year, $291,405 in TOP Grant funding is being awarded to increase access to technology at 54 public libraries across Tennessee.
