The Greene County Commission met yesterday evening and approved the resolution to authorize County Mayor Kevin Morrison to apply and submit an application for the 2023 Food Insecurity CV Community Development Block Grant.
Mayor Morrison said the grant is half of $1 M and requires no match. The resolution was made and added onto the agenda as the commissioners recognize there is a need to address food insecurity in Greene County. The grant could be used to provide help to individuals, assist food pantries and other organizations, as well as provide vehicles and other equipment to help agencies assist those in need.
Another resolution that was approved was the purchase of two augmented ARC Reality (Virtual) Welding Systems. Components and accessories from Volunteer Welding and Supply are included to provide career technical education for Greene County High School students and inmates at the Greene County Detention Center. All 3 would cost $21,463.67 each. Walter State Community College will purchase one of the virtual welders and has offered to provide instruction and training to allow students as well as inmates to become certified welders.
Commissioners approved amending the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year General Fund to budget revenues received for civic penalties imposed on vendors by the Greene County Beer Board for selling to underage adults.
Commissioners also approved the resolution to appropriate $2600 to the Sheriff’s Department for a donation from Steve Dockery for their K9 program and to appropriate funds for over $24,000 to the Sheriff’s Department for the sale of over 100 confiscated weapons. Sheriff Wesley Holt stated the weapons were confiscated from criminals.
