The Greene County Budget and Finance Committee met Wednesday morning and discussed forming a resolution to increase the wheel tax for Greene County, in an attempt to decrease the property tax rate approved in July.
The topic was not on their agenda but Commissioner Paul Burkey brought it up at the meeting and members of the committee agree that this is the only other way to give taxpayers some type of break when it comes to their property. There are still a few questions and details that need to be finalized like what will the wheel tax price increase to and what the voting process will be for commissioners, before the resolution is formed and can be submitted.
Currently the wheel tax is set at $55. As stated by Commissioner Tim Smithson, if the wheel tax is increased by for example $3 that is about 1 cent in property taxes. The current rate for property taxes in the county is $1.65 per $100 of taxable property.
Once details are confirmed and the resolution is formed it will be brought before the County Commission, who will need to vote on the proposal. The goal is to pass the resolution, submit it to the Greene County Election Commission at least 75 days prior to the upcoming election in March 2024, put it on the ballot, and then leave it up to registered voters.
