Deciding future plans for Baileyton Elementary, renovations of the gym and CDC facilities at Doak appear to be some of the more pressing facility needs in the Greene County School System.
School board members, joined by school and system leaders, discussed facility needs on Tuesday with the Director of Schools.
Dr. Chris Malone took those in attendance on a building-by-building breakdown of most necessary improvements, renovations, constructions and/or updates.
HVAC replacements are necessary at several schools. Several sewer plants need replaced or possibly new septic systems installed in their place. Roofing, whether repair or replacement is necessary on several buildings.
Malone says school zone lights currently twenty years old need replacing, hopefully he says with remote capabilities allowing flashing light times to be adjusted from the Central Office in case of such things as weather delays or early dismissal. Currently those can only be done by the time consuming chore of going directly to each individual school.
The bus garage plans to move into the T. Howard McNeese facility on Hal Henard Road. Also planning on how best to utilize the current Central Office facilities on West Summer Street will be decided at a later date. Those will be vacated when the Central Office operations and staff moves to the fourth floor of the former Takoma building. Malone says however he does not expect that move to happen until October of 2026.
Another facility workshop will be held at a later date to formalize improvement plans.
