The Greene County Board of Education has voted to give teachers in the system the one time $2,000 bonus authorized through the Education Freedom Act of 2025.
That was School Board Vice Chair Mark Rothe as Board Chair Rick Tipton was absent.
Meeting in regular session at the Central Office, the board by a vote of 5-1 approved the bonus. Stacey Franklin voting against it , due to his concern with the politics behind the plan.
Board member George Frye requested Director of Schools Dr. Chris Malone see if there would be a way financially to give some type of bonus to all employees.
The one-time bonus approved last night will be paid by the state sometime in July, following the beginning of the new fiscal year.
Until Thursday, neither local school system had taken any formal action on the bonus since it was approved during the special legislative session in January.
The Governor had indicated that local school boards did not necessarily have to approve of the entire voucher bill in order to get the bonus for their teachers.
School systems across the state have until June 1st to officially notify the state of their intentions as it pertains to the bonus.
The Greeneville City Board of Education did not discuss the bonus during their meeting this past Tuesday, but will meet again in April and May prior to the state deadline.
