The Unaka and Watauga Districts of the Cherokee National Forest will remain closed due to damage from Tropical Storm Helene. The closure affects the Cherokee National Forest north of I-40. Areas south of I-40 remain open.
Forest supervisor Michael Wright said that the area has seen unprecedented loss and destruction. Bridges and roads are missing due to flooding, the high winds have downed trees and made areas inaccessible. Even areas that are accessible remain unsafe due to overhanging limbs and trees, sometimes called Widow Makers because they could fall at any time.
All trails and roads are closed, including the Appalachian Trail. It is unknown if any hikers remain stranded along the trail, as blowdowns have made areas impassible. Infrared sensing drones are being discussed as an option to fly over the National Forest properties to check for anyone who may be stuck. No emergency rescue calls have been received in Greene County, however.
The forest closure includes Greene, Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington Counties.
Other areas of the National Forest on the North Carolina side are also closed. However, areas north and south of this area may remain unaffected. Check ahead before planning trips to those areas.
