One of the roads that has been closed since the September floods has reopened. Final paving was completed Wednesday on G’Fellers Road, which connects Old Jonesboro Road and Earnest Road.
Greene County Highway Superintendent Kevin Swatsell said December is a difficult time to pave, and the recent overnight lows in the teens has made that even more challenging. Swatsell pointed out the need to keep the asphalt hot and the temperature of the water used during the paving process as issues the department faced. Swatsell said, however, that the department had worked hard to reopen one of the last remaining closed roads despite those challenges.
The part of the road that was most severely damaged was around the Horse Creek bridge, with water backing up from the Nolichuckey River.
Swatsell said that Brown’s Bridge Road remains closed where the bank along the river washed away. Pates Hill Road, in western Greene County, which runs along the river, sustained significant damage and debris. It is passable, but to local traffic only. Final paving work remains to be done there. Indian Creek Road off of Bird’s Bridge Road is open to local traffic only due to damage to homes along the river.
