Greeneville Energy Authority is warning citizens of a phone scam.
Several customers have recently reported receiving calls from someone claiming to represent GEA. The scammer states the customer’s bill is overdue and that electric service will be disconnected within 45 minutes unless the immediate payment is made by calling an 888 phone number.
The scammer may appear to call from a local phone number, but this number is being spoofed to make the call seem legitimate. The scammer will attempt to create a sense of urgency to pressure customers into making an immediate payment. Scammers have also spoken with a foreign accent.
Greeneville Energy Authority reminds customers that they never demand immediate payment over the phone to avoid disconnection.
