A former Treasurer of Sunnyside Volunteer Fire Department was arrested Monday and charged for stealing money from the department.
Misty Spring Taylor of Jennifer Street in Greeneville was charged with Theft of Property over $10,000 but less than $60,000 after the Grand Jury met Monday. Taylor reportedly misappropriated more than $20,000 from the fire department’s bank account between November 2019 and August 2022. According to the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office, Taylor made 78 transfers from the department’s bank account to her and her husband’s joint personal bank account. The Comptroller’s Office said that Taylor’s husband, who served as fire cheif for the department, did not have knowledge of the transfers.
Taylor reportedly told investigators she borrowed the money from the department with the intention of paying it back. Investgiators identified transfers from Taylor’s personal bank account to reimburse the department’s account totaling nearly $13,600, leaving around $6,600 still due to the department.
Taylor will have an arraignment hearing in September of this year and will go before Judge John F. Dugger Jr.
