Former Greeneville Police Chief Terry Cannon was honored today as the long bore range pavilion at the Greene County Range and Firearms Sports Complex on Hal Henard Road was dedicated in his honor. A 4’x6′ plaque with his picture and bio was unveiled during a ceremony at the site off Hal Henard Road this morning.
Cannon began his 42 year career with the Greeneville Police Department in 1976. He worked patrol, then became a detective. In 1985, he was named Detective Sgt. until being promoted to Captain in 1999. He was named Assistant Chief to Mack Jones in 2004 and became Police Chief in 2008. Speaking of Chief Jones , that was the pretense under which Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison was able to get Cannon to attend the event, planning to speak about his former Chief. While the secret was apparently well kept, Cannon said he knew something was happening when he saw his wife and two grandchildren arriving at the scene.
Cannon had been appointed Range Master when it was first constructed, and even after retiring as Police Chief in 2018, remained Range Master until 2024.
In addition to Mayor Morrison, others speaking today were current Chief Steve Spano and former Chief Tim Ward and officer Clifford Lawing, all who worked under Cannon. Lawing is the current Range Master at the complex. Greene County Attorney Roger Woolsey also spoke.
