The five day forecast could bring the first significant snowfall of the winter, although there remains considerable uncertainty about how conditions may develop over the weekend.
The National Weather Service says a storm system is expected to approach the region later this week. As colder air moves into the area, there will be a chance for “impactful snow and ice” across parts of the state. Forecasters caution that there is still significant uncertainty regarding the track and strength of the system and urge residents to continue monitoring forecast updates throughout the week.
Current forecast models suggest the storm could produce moderate to heavy snowfall across the middle portion of the state and the Cumberland Plateau. Farther south, including the Chattanooga area, precipitation may fall as a mix of rain and snow. Upper East Tennessee could also see snow or a rain and snow mixture, depending on location and timing.
Meteorologists note that the storm system is still developing. A weaker system could result in lower chances for winter weather, while a shift in the track could change which areas are affected. At this point, it is too early to make any predictions on snowfall totals or precise locations.
Forecasters say confidence should improve by mid to late week as the system becomes better defined. Colder temperatures are expected to be in place, but uncertainty remains regarding how much moisture will be available and how efficiently it will combine with the cold air.
