Firefighters Battle Blaze Amid Sweltering Heat

A two-story log cabin was destroyed by fire late Friday morning on Bernard Road in northern Greene County, as crews from multiple departments and counties battled intense flames and scorching heat.

At 11:32 a.m., dispatchers received reports of thick black smoke billowing from a home at 790 Bernard Avenue.  United and Newmansville Volunteer Fire Departments were the first on the scene. By the time the first units arrived, the top floor of the log home was fully engulfed in flames.

The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no civilian injuries were reported.  About an hour into the response, an EMS unit was requested to evaluate a firefighter on scene, underscoring the physical toll the fire took on first responders working in temperatures that soared into the 90s.

Due to the intensity of the blaze, additional aid was requested shortly before noon from Mosheim and Tusculum Volunteer Fire Departments. And just after noon, commanders at the scene called for even more manpower, prompting response from Fall Branch VFD, as well as Persia, Goshen Valley, and Bulls Gap VFDs in Hawkins County.

While those departments were committed to the house fire, a separate grass fire broke out near the 35-mile marker on Interstate 81. With Mosheim units tied up, Fall Branch responded to that fire as well.

To support exhausted firefighters at the scene of the house fire, the Debusk Volunteer Fire Department’s rehab unit was dispatched around 12 noon. Water for firefighting operations was hauled in from a pond at a nearby campground off Horton Highway. Greeneville Energy Authority also responded to assist with utilities.

The fire was brought under control around 1:30 p.m., but crews remained on the scene throughout the hot afternoon, dousing hotspots and conducting overhaul operations.

Fighting house fires is always dangerous, but extreme heat adds a deadly layer of risk. Firefighters must contend not only with flames and smoke, but also heat exhaustion, dehydration, and the burden of heavy gear—all of which can take a serious toll on their bodies in hot summer conditions.  Debusk VFD rehab unit responds to these and other calls with cooling tents and water to help keep firefighters safe and rested.
