The Greeneville Police Department is investigating the discovery of a decomposing body found in a culvert in the 1700 block of Moore Avenue Saturday morning. Officers responded to the scene around 11:20 AM after receiving a call about a possible dead body.

Upon arrival, officers found a body in an advanced state of decay. Preliminary assessments suggest that the body had been at the location for about a week. The body has been transported to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center in Johnson City, TN, for identification and an autopsy.

Captain Tim Davis of the Greeneville Police Department said that the investigation is ongoing at this time, and the Police Department has no further information. Investigators are are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death. Due to the condition of the body, Greeneville Police were unable to confirm anything more about the age or sex of the body. Davis said further updates will come as they find out more information.

The area where the body was found, Moore Avenue, is located off Haynes Boulevard, which intersects with West Andrew Johnson Highway across from Lowe’s.

Authorities urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
