The Greene County Board of Education will meet next Thursday, January 26 at the Greene Technology Center.

The board will hold a discussion and a possible vote related to the growth of enrollment at Baileyton Elementary School. According to information provided with the meeting agenda, the enrollment at Baileyton has grown from 309 students in 2012-13 to 401 students this school year. The school has a capacity of 413 students, and has 20 students apiece in two pre-K classrooms.

Plans include adding four 30 foot by 30 foot classrooms to the existing building at a cost of $1.35 million, or lease mobile classrooms at an annual cost of nearly $450,000. A third option is to renovate the auditorium into three classrooms at an estimated cost of just over $600,000.

A fourth option would be to move fifth-grade students at Baileyton to North Greene Middle School, which has a capacity of 365 students. According to the document, using the middle school to house Baileyton’s fifth graders would still leave the building at no more than a projected two-thirds use by the 2027-28 school year.

Also on the agenda is approval of various capital improvements at schools through the system, at a cost of $1.64 million that would come from the fund balance. Replacement of dishwashers at four schools at a total cost of $310,000 is also up for approval.

The board will also vote to extend the contract of Director of Schools David McLain for three years, beginning February 1. McLain has been director of Greene County Schools since 2015 and would receive a base salary of $122,000 per year.

Thursday’s meeting of the Greene County Board of Education begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by the joint meeting with the Greeneville City Board of Education at 6 p.m.
