The Greene County Road Committee unanimously recommended decreasing the speed limit on the county-maintained portion of Snapps Ferry Road to 45 miles per hour during its meeting Tuesday night.

The request was made by Jason Cobble, who lives at 3270 Snapps Ferry Road. Cobble is a county commissioner, but does not serve on the Road Committee.

In a request submitted to the committee, Cobble said that many wrecks have happened on the road over the past several years in the area where Snapps Ferry Road transitions from Town of Greeneville maintenance to Greene County maintenance.

Inside the town limits, the speed limit of Snapps Ferry Road is 35 miles per hour, but outside of the town limits the speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

In the request submitted to the committee, Cobble said that the property along the road had become more developed in recent years and led to more traffic.

Cobble requested that the speed limit be decreased in the section of Snapps Ferry nearest to the town limits, but the committee recommended that the speed limit be decreased to 45 miles per hour for the length of the road until it reached Rheatown Road also known as Highway 351.

The recommendation will go to the full Greene County Commission at its March meeting at which time the Commission will consider giving final approval to the change.
