The Greene County Budget and Finance Committee unanimously approved a resolution on Wednesday morning to lease 30 parking spaces from the Town of Greeneville for employees that work at the courthouse including but not limited to criminal court, circuit court, sessions court, and chancery court.
Currently, parking is not provided for employees that work at the courthouse, and Circuit Court Clerk Whitney Collins said that she felt parking should be provided by the county.
She noted that those employees that work at for other county departments have parking available at their offices, and the courthouse is the only space where employees must find their own parking or pay for parking.
Collins stated that some employees leased spaces in a lot behind the former Lancaster’s building, but that the lot was becoming difficult to access as the project gets underway to add restrooms to the courthouse due to the aging building’s dilapidated plumbing system. County officials began working in 2025 to tackle maintenance issues with the plumbing at the courthouse that have gone unaddressed for decades.
The cost to lease the 30 spaces in the town’s Snapp Lot, off Summer Street, would be $9,000 annually.
The Greeneville Parking Authority had voted in March to offer the spaces to the county, leading to the action Wednesday by the Budget and Finance Committee.
The resolution will be subject to the consideration of the full County Commission at its meeting on April 20.
