The Greeneville City Council approved an ordinance to amend Title 12 of the Town of Greeneville Municipal Code, which will require signage for companies working within the public rights-of-way.
With this ordinance, utility companies have to provide specific signage on their vehicles that visibly state the company name, information, and phone number or a sign has to be placed within the work area. The topic was previously discussed in an August meeting due to Town Hall receiving complaints. Council member Scott Bullington brought up companies blocking the roads, not following TDOT rules, and not having proper equipment or gear. There were also complaints of damage to properties.
Many residents weren’t sure who to contact to express their concerns due to vehicle’s not having their company information. A $50 fee will be given to those who don’t provide signage. Bullington felt the $50 fee was weak and wont stop companies from not complying. According to City Manager Todd Smith, the fee was the maximum amount that could be given because of the State Law.
