The Greeneville City Board of Education met Thursday evening after their joint board meeting with Greene County Schools.
The board heard from Director of Schools Steve Starnes who said he’s been getting reports regarding students stressed out and anxious because of third grade retention. Starnes said there have been some slight changes but they won’t go into effect until next year. The following students are exempt from third grade retention: English learners with less than two years in ELA instruction, those previously retained in grades K-3, disability that impacts reading, and suspected disability that impacts reading.
A tuition free program at Highland Elementary was approved as well as equipment including: a dishwasher for about $73,000 for Hal Henard Elementary School, a deep fryer for Greeneville High School for almost $42,000, and a walk-in freezer and cooler for about $33,000. The dishwasher is funded through an award from the state of Tennessee and grant funding was also provided from Kimberly Wilhoit. The equipment purchased is a Sourcewell contract and is over $148,000.
All policy revisions on first and second reading were approved during Thursday’s meeting.
