A scam involving fake home equity checks was pulled at two Greeneville banks on Tuesday, according to police.
In both cases, a man went to First Horizon branches on North Main Street and the Asheville Highway and presented a home equity line of credit check in the amount of $8,700. The man showed South Carolina identification that matched the name on the account and was able to cash both checks.
A short time later, the bank received an e-mail that a man matching the description of the suspect had been to 31 different locations writing the checks while using different victim names. All of the victims are from South Carolina, and the suspect was using fake IDs and Social Security numbers to complete the transactions.
A copy of the the transactions were given to the Criminal Investigations Division of the Greeneville Police Department.
