As we “spring forward” and transition to Daylight Saving Time this weekend, area fire departments want you to remember when you move clocks ahead one hour, it’s also the perfect time to check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries if needed.
These life-saving devices provide early warnings that can mean the difference between life and death in a fire or carbon monoxide emergency.
For smoke alarms with replaceable batteries, the National Fire Protection Association recommends changing the batteries every six months. Smoke alarms with 10-year sealed batteries should be replaced every 10 years. Testing should be conducted monthly to ensure alarms are working properly.
Carbon monoxide detectors should also be tested once a month and batteries replaced at least once a year.
Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday at 2:00 AM.
