Fourteen years ago this morning was the day many of us awoke to hear official word of deadly tornadoes in the Camp Creek, Horse Creek and South Central areas.
Eight people perished as five tornadoes roared across the area.
The beautifully manicured memorial in honor of those who died is on display in front of the Camp Creek Ruritan building at 2999 Camp Creek Road.
Names of those who lost their lives as a result of the storms are inscribed on the memorial.

As we made a trip to Camp Creek Sunday greeted by sunny skies and only a gentle breeze, remnants of the devastation were not as easily seen as a decade ago.
What was more noticeable was a proud community nestled in the beautiful spring green of the mountains surrounding it, remembering daily those who lost their lives on that April night in 2011.
