The people have spoken through the voting process and the verdict is in: NOT GUILTY!
Every May, park staff open the ballot boxes and count both the “Guilty” and “Not Guilty” ballots cast by visitors since the previous May.
An interactive exhibit at the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site Visitor Center in Greeneville allows visitors to read the impeachment exhibits and then cast their votes regarding the 17th president’s innocence or guilt to the 11 Articles of Impeachment he was charged with in 1868.
This year’s vote saw a rare even number of votes cast by visitors regarding Andrew Johnson’s innocence. The final tally was 3,000 NOT GUILTY votes vs. 1,504 GUILTY votes.
So once again this year , President Andrew Johnson has been vindicated by the people.
