Brad Peters was officially named Greene County’s first staff engineer on Monday evening.
Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison announced Monday that Peters had been chosen out of a pool applicants for the role, and the Greene County Commission consented the hire. Seventeen commissioners voted in favor Peters taking the role, with commissioners Parton and White abstaining from the vote. Peters, a sitting 2nd District County Commissioner, abstained from the vote as well and left the room as the matter came up for consent consideration.
Morrison compared the Commission’s role in confirming the appointment to that of the United States Senate and its role as a confirming body for executive branch appointees.
After the meeting, Peters said he was glad to have the support of the County Commission as he started in the new role.

The Greene County Building and Zoning Office is in the process of being restructured into the Greene County Department of Engineering and Building Services. Peters will lead the department in his role as engineer. A licensed engineer, Peters holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UT Knoxville.
The change to the county’s Building and Zoning Office was announced by the county’s Human Resources Department in late July.
Peters will be leading the reorganized department that will be funded with a federal grant through the county’s new partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.
The Forest Service will fund the position in full through federal dollars for five years at a pay rate of between $80,000 to $120,000.
Peters said he was excited to partner with the Forest Service on improvement projects in Greene County, particularly in recreation areas such as Horse Creek.

According to Morrison, Peters will assist not only with Forest Service related projects, but he will also serve as the county’s new Planning Coordinator and serve the county in other ways. A full-time and part-time position in the Planning and Zoning Department have been eliminated as a part of the restructuring.
Peters will also oversee the county’s Building Official Tim Tweed.
Peters served as Town of Greeneville Engineer and Public Works Director from 2011 to 2022, and said he would draw on that experience in taking over his new role managing county planning.

Peters was recently reelected to one of three 2nd District County Commissioner seats, finishing second out of six candidates. Peters will be sworn in for another four-year term as a County Commissioner in early September, and he said Monday that for now he will remain a member of the commission while taking on the role of County Engineer.
