The Greeneville Water Commission is advising residents to shut off their hot water heaters as the water supply for Greene County dries up in the coming days or hours.
The destruction of the water intake station means no water can be pumped to the filtration center. That means residents will be served only by the water reservoir on Buckingham Road, which holds about a two day supply of water.
As lines run dry, water tanks can be drained of water. If the elements continue to heat the small amounts of remaining liquid, it can turn it to steam, causing tremendous pressures to build up.
The GWC advises you to turn off the supply water to your hot water heaters, and recommends you do that to avoid burning up elements should there be a break or leak that could drain tanks faster.
Then be sure to turn off the breaker to the unit. Cutting off the power supply is one of the most important steps to take.
