Extremely cold temperatures are expected across the area beginning Sunday, along with some light snow.
An arctic cold front will move across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians on Sunday, ushering in frigid air into the region.
Rain early Sunday is expected to mix with and change to snow by late morning. Light accumulations are expected, with the heaviest snowfall up to 4 inches possible across the mountains.
The high Sunday will be in the upper 30, but temperatures will then plummet into the single digits Sunday night. Wind chills will drop to near zero Sunday night and as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero in the mountains. The lows for Monday and Tuesday night will also be in the single digits, with highs in the upper teens to mid 20s.
Be prepared for frigid and wintry conditions. Dress in loose layers and cover all exposed skin when venturing outside. Limit time outdoors, if possible. Make sure outdoor animals have warm shelter and bedding.
It is also recommended to leave a water faucet dripping overnight to prevent pipes from freezing.
