Another telephone scam is in the area. The Greene County Sheriff’s Detention Center Administrator John Key recently received several calls from concerned citizens. The citizens are reporting getting calls from a “Lt. Wagner” asking for money.
Many scammers will “spoof” actual business’ phone numbers. This means that your Caller ID will show an actual number to a business. However, the scammer may ask you to call another number to get more information. Since you are not calling the actual business number, you will reach the scammer.
“We do have an employee named Wagner. It appears the scammers are using his name to seem more legitimate,” says Administrator Key. “Please remember that the Detention Center nor the Sheriff’s Department will call you asking for money.”
Administrator Key urges anyone that receives such a call to hang up before giving any information or money.
