To protect the health and well-being of the animals in their care, Greene County Animal Control will be closed to the public on Saturdays beginning July 11 through September 8 due to parvovirus being introduced to the facility by relinquished canines the agency announced Wednesday afternoon.
During that time, staff will be conducting enhanced cleaning, disinfection, and biosecurity measures to help eliminate the virus and reduce the risk of further exposure to animals housed at the shelter, according to a news release from Animal Control.
Animal intake services will continue while the Saturday closures are in effect, however, any canines accepted into the agency’s care will be temporarily housed at the old Humane Society Building adjacent to the main facility to help protect further canines from potential exposure while the main facility undergoes continued sanitation efforts.
The local Humane Society moved out of the building and into a new facility on North Rufe Taylor Road in early 2023, and the organization’s former building on Hal Henard Road reverted back to the ownership of Greene County. The county provided the land for the construction of the shelter in the 1980s. After some fixing up, the old shelter once again began housing animals through Animal Control in January.
“We understand this temporary change may cause some inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we take the necessary steps to safeguard the health of the animals entrusted to our care,” the release states. “Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
Regular weekday business hours will remain unchanged. Animal Control anticipates resuming normal Saturday operations on September 12 unless circumstances require additional measures.
