Andrew Johnson’s historic homestead on Main Street in Greeneville has officially reopened the National Park Service has announced.

The Homestead closed in September 2025 due to a faulty electrical line that nearly caused a fire in the historic structure. Bottom rooms of the building were filled with smoke as a result of the electrical short. A ruptured water line further delayed repairs and the subsequent reopening of the historic site.

Daily guided tours have resumed at the Homestead. Tickets for guided tours are available for free on a first-come, first-served basis at the park visitor center, 101 N. College Street.

In addition to the reopening of the Homestead, the National Historic Site’s Memorial Building, which contains the original Andrew Johnson Tailor Shop, has also reopened.

The visitor center closed in August 2025 for renovation work that included the removal and installation of two HVAC systems – one for the visitor center and a second for the Memorial Building, which houses the tailor shop. Additional renovation work was carried out in the visitor center. The park operated a visitor contact station during most of this construction work.

The Memorial Building of the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site reopened after being closed while a new HVAC system was installed.

The Visitor Center portion of the structure not housing the tailor shop closed first. Once renovations were completed there, the Memorial Building housing the tailor shop was briefly closed for HVAC installation.

Visitors can now enjoy a full suite of visitor services, including the park’s landmark 15-minute orientation film, presidential museum and exhibits, gift shop area, and access to the original Andrew Johnson Tailor Shop.

The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site includes Andrew Johnson’s Early Home, the Homestead, his original tailor shop and Andrew Johnson National Cemetery on Monument Hill where Johnson is buried.
