The Stars and Stripes are flying over Andrew Johnson National Cemetery once more.
Recently, park staff installed a 25-foot flagpole at the Commencement Circle in the cemetery, restoring a visible symbol of honor and valor while plans continue for replacing the historic flagpole that was damaged in a storm in May 2025.
The original 76-foot flagpole, which was taken from a Navy ship’s mast and stood in the cemetery for more than a century, was removed in July 2025 due to the damage.
According to the Park Service, plans are underway to install a new flagpole at the original location on Monument Hill, where the now removed flagpole long stood over the cemetery. In the meantime, the new flag at the Commencement Circle serves as a reminder of the service and sacrifice of those laid to rest at the cemetery.
To see the flag, access Commencement Circle via the East Vann Road entrance. It’s located between Sections M, P, Q, and S at the end of the road according to the Park Service.
