Allied Health Noncredit Programs Planned By Walters State

Walters State’s Division of Workforce Training plans to offer several allied health career classes in the coming months. With these courses, students may launch a new career after just a few months of training.

Students enrolling in these classes are required to have CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications. These can both be completed in one class offered through Walters State.

SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS
Clinical Medical Assistant, May 19-Oct. 20, Mondays and Wednesdays, 8-11:30 a.m.
This program trains students to assist physicians by performing clinical functions before during and after a patient visit. Students learn how to prepare patients for an exam and treatment, perform routine laboratory procedures, and conduct diagnostic testing. Students also learn about phlebotomy, pharmacology and use and administration of medication. This class also covers taking/documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placement, professional workplace behavior and ethics. The cost of this program is $3,000.

MORRISTOWN CAMPUS
• Certified Nursing Assistant, July 14-Sept. 29, 4:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays
The Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) training specifically targets those individuals who want to become a licensed C.N.A. in Tennessee. Duties include basic routine patient care including assistance with meals and exercise, taking vital signs, assisting with personal hygiene, and reporting symptoms of illness. This class is divided into components: lecture, classroom skills lab and 35 hours of supervised patient clinical care in a long-term care facility. The cost is $899.
• Phlebotomy Technician, Aug. 4-Oct. 15, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-9 p.m.
This program includes 10 weeks of classroom and lab skills training in didactic and clinical venipuncture. This 70-hour class trains professionals to collect blood specimens from patients for laboratory analysis. For certifications, students must complete 40 successful venipunctures. Following completion of the class, students may take the National Healthcareer Association Certification exam. The cost is $1,500.

NISWONGER CAMPUS
• Certified Nursing Assistant, April 29-July 15, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30-9:30 p.m.

The cost is $899.
• Registered Dental Assistant, May 5-Sept. 22, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.  This 120-hour class is approved by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry and covers anatomy and physiology, tooth morphology, infection control, restorative dentistry and radiology in the dental office. Students will be required to provide documentation of 30 additional hours of observation at a dental office. Graduates may register as a dental assistant with the Tennessee of Dentistry. The cost is $2,250.
