We begin a heartbreaking story for those of us here in the Radio Greeneville family with the good news first.
Brian and Erin Stayton and their children are safe.
But their home on Old Tusculum Road near the Oak Grove Road intersection was severely damaged as a result of a Monday afternoon fire.
Units from the Greeneville Fire Department responded to the call just after 1:00 pm Monday at 2210 Old Tusculum Road. Brian Stayton, Operations Manager at Radio Greeneville, and Erin Stayton, a local nurse practitioner, were not at home when the fire began. Connor and Gabi were home from college on Christmas break and called 9-1-1 to report the out of control fire.
Greeneville Fire Chief Alan Shipley told Radio Greeneville News Monday night units were dispatched to the working structure fire with flames visible at the back of the house. Greeneville Fire Engine 3 reported heavy black smoke visible from their station location on East Andrew Johnson Highway.
Upon arrival firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions from the rear deck that had extended into the second floor and attic area. 15 Greeneville firefighters battled the blaze and 9 off duty firefighters were called back to assist. Shipley reports the fire was brought under control with the structure suffering heavy fire and smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Greeneville Fire Department. Units cleared the scene around 6:30 pm. A unit returned to area just after 10:00 pm as a follow up check on the fire scene.
