In Carter County, as fire suppression efforts continue at the landfill, officials are addressing air quality concerns.
Numerous fire departments from around the area, including Mosheim, the Town of Mosheim, Caney Branch and Tusculum Volunteer Fire Departments first responded Friday to assist with shuttling water to the scene.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency have been closely monitoring the situation. Authorities say debris in the landfill from Hurricane Helene was helping fuel the fire, which may involve hazardous materials such as tires and propane tanks.
Residents in nearby areas with respiratory issues were advised over the weekend to consider temporary relocation if necessary.
