Two Greene County men reported that they were victimized by scams this week, with one losing $23,000.
The first man found what appeared to be a virus on his computer. He tried to fix it and believed that he was in contact with Microsoft, where the suspect told him that he needed to transfer all his money to a separate bank due to likely being hacked.
The man withdrew $23,000 in two separate transactions from his bank, and admitted that lied to the bank per the scammer’s instructions when he was questioned about the withdrawals. The man then converted the money into Bitcoin which he gave to the suspect.
The second victim said he received a call Tuesday afternoon from someone claiming to be with Xfinity, who said he owed $1,000 on his account. The man was told to purchase and send gift cards to the caller, and sent two for $225 apiece.
The victim then was told that the cards were declined and he had to send two more cards, which he again sent in the amount of $225 apiece. After being told that the second set of cards were also declined, the man went to the local Xfinity store where he was told that they would never ask for any sort of gift card.
The total amount of gift cards purchased by the victim was $900, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
