The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released more details about the multi-vehicle crash in downtown Gatlinburg Sunday afternoon that injured seven people, including two pedestrians.
The accident occurred around 4:20 pm when a southbound minivan accelerated unexpectedly, striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk before colliding with several other vehicles. The impact caused one of the vehicles to hit a roadside sign, which then fell and injured a second pedestrian on the sidewalk.
In addition to the two injured pedestrians, five others who were in two different vehicles were injured.
The THP is investigating the accident, with assistance from its Critical Incident Response Team. Early indications suggest the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash. Findings in the case will be turned over to the District Attorney General’s Office for review.
