A resolution that would have named a state bridge in Greene County in honor of a deceased Vietnam veteran was pulled by the sponsor after debate over honoring other similar veterans.
The resolution by Commissioner Brad Peters called for naming the bridge in honor of LCPL James Oakley Jaynes. The resolution reads “Jaynes gave his life in service to his country during the Vietnam War.
Commissioner Lloyd “Hoot” Bowers, himself a Vietnam veteran, said he had no problem honoring deceased veterans of the war, but had concerns about the 21 other servicemen from Greene County who died in Vietnam not receiving similar recognition.
Bowers suggested the bridge be called “Vietnam Veterans Bridge”, but as debate continued, Peters withdrew his proposal, saying Bowers was free to enter his own resolution at a future meeting.
