A California man died in a three-vehicle accident around 5:00 Friday morning on Interstate 81 in Greene County near mile marker 41.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report, 26-year-old Bhupinder Singh was killed in the wreck.
A Jeep Compass driven by 29-year-old Crystal Rivera of Pennsylvania was parked on the right shoulder of the interstate. A tractor-trailer driven by Singh reportedly struck the left side of the Jeep. The tractor-trailer then spun to the right and ran off the roadway on the right side. The truck then rolled over onto its top and came to rest facing north with the trailer partially in the right travel lane.
The THP report indicates that Singh died as a result of the crash.
Rivera and a passenger, 21-year-old Marisabel Concepcion of Pennsylvania, were not injured in the crash.
A third tractor-trailer was also involved in the accident and reportedly came to rest in the median. That driver was uninjured.
The accident resulted in that area of Interstate 81 being closed for hours as investigation and cleanup took place. Traffic was detoured onto the Kingsport Highway and the Horton Highway, resulting in significant traffic congestion through the day. A tractor-trailer carrying a large load reportedly became stuck late Friday morning on Horton Highway and caused traffic delays.
