Seven months following the damage and destruction caused along the Nolichucky River, the Greeneville Emergency and Rescue Squad is still warning residents and those who use the water for recreation that the river has experienced notable changes. The waterways have shifted in ways that call for greater awareness and respect.
Emergency personnel say the river has changed course in places, with new sandbars, eroded banks, submerged debris in previously clear areas, swift water movement, with areas that were once calm now posing new challenges for recreation and response.
Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, having responded to these rivers many times, has seen firsthand how quickly conditions can change.
The Emergency and Rescue Squad is encouraging everyone to exercise caution and stay informed while near the water, whether boating, fishing, or simply enjoying nature.
• Riverbanks may be unstable
• Currents can be stronger and less predictable
• Debris and hazards may be hidden beneath the surface
A release says the rivers may look familiar, but they are not the same. Greeneville Emergency and Rescue Squad assures residents it remains dedicated to protecting our community and ask that you join them in respecting the power of the waters.
