Students taking French classes at North Greene High School are participating in an international music competition again this March.
The French teacher at North Greene High School, Larry Justis, says the competition began when two French teachers in Maine wanted their classes to interact more. The idea quickly became popular to schools world wide.
Justis says in the competition, the organizers will choose 16 songs by French-speaking artists and the students will place them in brackets based on what song they think will win the most votes, similar to a sports tournament bracket.
Every two days the North Greene students will vote for their favorite song out of a pair until a winner is declared.
Justis states that this event allows North Greene Students to not only get familiar with the language through music but also learn more about culture and artists as they interact with this global competition.
This year, over 870,000 students in more than 7,100 schools in 35 countries around the world are taking part in the Maine Musicale (Musical Mania) competition.
Justis says the goal is for his students to remember and appreciate the French language long after high school.
