The Tennessee Department of Education says 162 schools have indicated they will take part in the Tennessee Education Freedom Scholarship program, also referred to as the Voucher Bill.
Despite opposition from many school systems , the legislation was passed during the special legislative session in January.
The Greeneville City and Greene County School Boards have yet to decide on whether to opt in to the program, which would result in a $2,000 one time bonus for teachers. Both boards have indicated they do intend to before the June deadline, but are awaiting further information from the state regarding the guidelines.
The seven schools in upper East Tennessee who have signed up thus far are all “faith-based” , four in Washington County, two in Hamblen County and one in Sullivan County. A large majority of the schools who have signed up to date are also “faith-based”
