Tusculum and Newmansville Fire Departments responded to a grass and woods fire in the 5500 block of Whitehouse Road around 2 pm today. The fire, which apparently had been left unattended, spread to about two acres, but was kept from spreading further by the adjacent road and quick response by volunteer fire fighters.
This fire came during a 5 day period of extremely low humidity that prompted the National Weather Service to issue Elevated Fire Danger advisories. Area volunteer fire departments have been busy over that period of time responding to several fires which got out of control. The humidity level on Monday dropped to 15% Monday.
A weather system moving across the country is expected to bring gusty winds and heavy rains to the area in the coming days.
