As they have done all winter, the C.A.R.E. Center warming shelter remains open at Asbury Church on nights when the temperatures drop to below freezing.
The shelter is open in the evening from 8pm to 8am.
Organizers are reaching out for volunteers to chaperone each evening during those hours. Two volunteers are needed per shift (at least one male and one female for each four to eight hour shift depending on the number of volunteers available). No prior training or experience is necessary and an orientation will be provided along with everything a volunteer will need.
A group spokesperson says volunteers provide a welcoming and caring presence to guests each night and attend to any needs that arise. Nights are typically very quiet with 10-20 guests sleeping on cots or blanket pallets in our Fellowship Hall. In the mornings prior to 8am, guests return to the C.A.R.E center. The C.A.R.E. center provides snacks, refreshments, and meals.
Anyone who can assist any of these nights, even if just for a few hours, is asked to contact Rhonda at the C.A.R.E. Center at (423) 620-9786.
