Representative David Hawk says Greene County Assessor of Property Chuck Jeffers has been leading the way in proposed legislation which would allow property owners to recover some tax monies paid for the final quarter of 2024, after flooding destroyed numerous homes and damaged properties.
Hawk says Jeffers and Greene County Trustee Nathan Holt “have really done a good job stepping up on day one after the hurricane hit of assessing damage to the homes and homes no longer there.”
Because of state law Hawk says “all the tax bills had to be prepared by September 1st , because the county governments had already set their budgets, so there is really nothing local government could do to adjust property tax assessments or bills that were really being shipped out that month. So what I hope to do and taking Chuck Jeffers lead on this is to create some type of a rebate process to where what ever they lost in their property for the last three months of the 2024 tax season that they get rebated those monies.” “Greene County has really led the way in what that is going to look like.”
Hawk says he and others will be co-sponsors of House Bill 6007 sponsored by Jeremy Faison of Cocke County.
Hawk says he believes the bill will be addressed during the special session this week.
