Sumuri says the Berkeley County, West Virginia Sheriff’s Office led by 200 votes, but on the final day, the Greene County community ralled, earning over 800 votes to grab the win.
After the initial announcement, Sumuri announced it was also giving a similar unit to Berkeley County due to the hard fought battle.
A writeup about the local department on the Sumuri site said Greene County is making strides in modernizing its operations to better serve the community, addressing challenges from the past.
The Digital Forensics Unit, which previously handled 20-30 device extractions annually, has already processed 61 devices since achieving certification in mid-2024.
Efforts are underway to upgrade software for securely storing sensitive data, particularly juvenile cases that cannot use cloud storage.
With devices now holding up to 500GB of data, the department’s current computers struggle to process and analyze extractions efficiently.
Upgraded technology would greatly enhance their ability to manage cases and support the community effectively.
