A decades-old Greeneville tradition continued Tuesday as members of the Greeneville Professional Firefighters Association escorted Santa Claus around town to deliver treats during their annual treat delivery. It’s the 74th year for this holiday tradition.
Greeneville Fire Chief Alan Shipley shared that this annual tradition is something the firefighters eagerly anticipate, as it allows them to stay connected with the community and spread the Christmas spirit.
While many of the items, such as fresh fruits and toys, are donated, Shipley emphasized that donations from the firefighters themselves are essential to making this event a reality.
Former Greeneville Mayor W.T. Daniels, whose father served with the Greeneville Fire Department and helped start this tradition, said it began in 1951. Daniels recalled that the first deliveries were made to Holston Home, with Clark Harrison stepping in to portray Santa Claus.
Over the years, the route has expanded to include stops at the Greeneville Housing Authority on Ross Boulevard, as well as the apartment complexes at Twin Oaks, Hidden Oaks, and Crestview Terrace. Santa and the fire trucks then visited the housing complex on Price Lane off West Main, before making stops on Wesley Avenue and George Clem, and finally heading to the apartment buildings near the Election Commission and Tusculum View.
At each stop, firefighters and their families handed out treat bags to residents, while Santa distributed gifts to the dozens of children who came out to greet him.
Shipley noted that this event is one of the most rewarding experiences the department participates in each year.
